A PEEK INTO STOP MISBEHAVIOR
(www.stopmisbehavior.com)

In my e-book, Stop Misbehavior, I will lead you through five powerful steps that will help you change your child's behavior. Each step is fully and clearly presented with examples and exercises.

Stop Misbehavior is practical and action-oriented. You won't waste time belaboring the past and blaming yourself or others. You will focus on the present and the future. You will learn new ways to change your child's behavior.

Step One - What Do You Want?
You decide what you want to change and I will guide you in setting a workable goal. Success depends on focusing on one thing at a time and having a clear idea of what you want to achieve.

Step Two - Discover "Hidden Solutions"
It may be a surprise to you that you are already doing many things right - "hidden" or partial solutions to your parenting problem. I will help you discover them and put them to work in achieving your goal.

Step Three - Do Something Different
You and your child may be stuck in repetitive, unpleasant patterns of behavior. You feel as if you are "spinning your wheels." I will teach you how to break out of that discouraging cycle and do something different. You will become skilled at using a large variety of practical ideas that work. No more "wheel spinning."

Step Four - Think Something Different
How you think about the problem situation and your child's misbehavior can make a big difference in how successful you are in changing things. I will show you how to view the situation and your child's misbehavior from different perspectives. As you learn to see circumstances from diverse points of view, it will be easier for you to act effectively and achieve your goal.

Step Five - Backsliding
You know the old saying about "three steps forward and one step backwards." Especially at the beginning, your child's changed behavior is likely to have its ups and downs. Setbacks are normal and temporary. The secret of maintaining your progress is being prepared for the possibility of some "backsliding." I will teach you how to have a plan in mind so that you will maintain your composure and achieve your goal.

In addition to the five-step process, I will offer you some thoughts about taking care of yourself and your family. Suggestions of outside resources are also presented for your information.

Give yourself some great new parenting skills. No risk. Click on www.stopmisbehavior.com. now!

A Little Humor

A Noise in the Engine

Taxiing down the runway, the passenger jet abruptly came to a stop, turned around and returned to the gate. Eventually however, after an hour-long wait, the flight finally took off.
A concerned passenger asked the flight attendant, "What was the problem?"
"The pilot was bothered by a noise he heard in the engine," explained the Flight Attendant.
"I hope the problem is resolved now." Replied the nervous passenger.
"Oh yes, it's fine now, Sir. It just took us a while to find a new pilot."

The Boy and the Broom

One afternoon a little boy was playing outdoors. He used his mother's broom as a horse and had a wonderful time until it was getting dark.
He left the broom on the back porch. His mother was cleaning up the kitchen when she realized that her broom was missing. She asked the little boy about the broom and he told her where it was.
She then asked him to please go get it. The little boy informed his mom that he was afraid of the dark and didn't want to go out to get the broom.
His mother smiled and said 'The Lord is out there too. Don't be afraid." The little boy opened the back door a little and said 'Lord if you're out there, hand me the broom'.

The Penny Pincher

An old penny pincher had no friends. Just before he died he asked his doctor, lawyer, and pastor to gather around him at bedside.
"I have always heard that you can't take it with you. But I want to disprove that theory," he said. "I have $90,000 under my mattress, and when I die, just before they throw the dirt on me at my burial, I want you each to toss in an envelope with $30,000 in it."
The three attended the funeral and each threw his envelope in the grave. On the way back from the cemetery, the pastor said, "I must confess. I needed $10,000 for my new church, so I only threw in $20,000." The doctor then said, "I must confess too. I needed $20,000 for a new hospital I was opening up, so I only threw in $10,000."
The lawyer looked at them both and shook his head. He then said, "Gentlemen, I'm surprised, shocked, and ashamed of you. I don't see how you could dare to go against that man's final wish. I mean, I threw in my personal check for the full amount…"

Thought for the Day

Don't Quit!

When things go wrong as they sometimes will.
When the road you're drudging seems all uphill.
When the funds are low, and the debts are high,
and you want to smile but you have to sigh.
When care is pressing you down a bit.
Rest if you must but don't you quit!

Life is queer with its twists and turns,
as everyone of us sometimes learns.
And many a failure turns about.
When he might have won had he stuck it out.
Don't give up though the pace seems slow -
you may succeed with another blow.

Success is failure turned inside out -
the silver tint of the cloud of doubt.
And you never can tell how close you are.
It may be near when it seems so far.
So stick to the fight when you're hardest hit-
it's when things seem worst that you must not quit.

PLAY AND PROFIT: What a Playful Corporate Culture Will Do For Your Organization

Is your workplace a pleasant place to be? Do your employees look forward to coming to work - at least some of the time? The mix of work and play in your organization may drive much of your employees' commitment and productivity.

Frequently, work and play are considered to be independent of each other. Work is what we do at the office. Play is for home and personal life. Playfulness at work is a waste of time. It may even be punished.

How Does Humor Help?

Research suggests that productivity and profit are directly related to a light-hearted, good-natured atmosphere at work. In one study, Dr. David Abramis, a psychologist at California State University's School of Business Administration found that workers who have the most fun at their jobs:

  • are more productive
  • demonstrate more creativity
  • make better decisions
  • get along better with co-workers.

They have fewer absentee, late, and sick days than workers who aren't having fun.

A recruitment firm surveyed 1,000 executives. 84% of respondents reported that workers with a sense of humor do a better job. 737 corporate CEO's were interviewed in another study. The executives said they prefer to hire someone with a sense of humor to someone without that quality.

Other experts report benefits such as:

  • better teamwork
  • increased job satisfaction and retention
  • improved focus on work
  • savings in medical costs from the healthful changes in respiratory, cardiovascular and immune systems that come from laughter and humor.

This doesn't mean that owners and managers should become stand-up comics. Nor does it suggest that goofing off by the water fountain all day is a good thing. It does suggest that respectful, appropriate fun and humor at work foster a positive attitude that creates a more productive workforce. This is true of spontaneous, silly moments as well as planned fun events. Southwest Airlines, Sun Microsystems and other companies have become classic examples of organizations with a playful corporate culture.

What Can I Do?

Develop a strategy to create and maintain an appropriately playful corporate culture:

  • Give your employees permission to enjoy their time at work. We spend far too
much of our life at work or traveling to and from work to insist that it be void of laughter and humor.
  • Be an example. Lighten up. Enjoy the humor and fun in your own work.
  • Make the physical space where your people work "feel" and look energizing.
  • Use respectful humor in presentations, memos, newsletters and meetings.
  • Post non-offensive humorous material in cubicles and on bulletin boards.

Do some fun or silly things once in a while:

  • Celebrate birthdays, births, successes, the arrival of a new piece of equipment -
    whatever.
  • Have occasional catered or pot luck lunches.
  • Start each staff meeting with good news or appreciations.
  • Declare a "Decorate Your Cubicle Day."
  • Involve family members in events and celebrations.
  • Sponsor occasional Employee Nights with movies, desserts, etc.
  • Do a community service project together.
  • Plan staff outings or activities.
  • Hand out buttons or fortune cookies with clean humor.

An atmosphere that supports spontaneous levity and play is the best. A busy calendar full of planned "fun" activities is not the goal. All humor must respectful and non-offensive.

There is a sound business rationale for establishing a playful corporate culture. It's good for people and it's good for profits. For more on this topic, read Fun Works: Creating Places Where People Love To Work by Leslie Yerkes.
